Caretenoids - xanthophylls and carotenes


- xanthophylls: contain oxygen


Benefits and Usage:
The eye contains lutien, astaxanthin and zeaxanthin, that directly absorbs damaging blue and near ultra violet light to protect the macula of the retina, (the part of the eye with the sharpest vision).

- carotenes: purely hydrocarbons, contain no oxygen


Benefits and Usage:
In humans, four carotenoids: beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, gamma-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin, have vitamin A, and can be converted to retinal. These act as antioxidants.
